The Best Investments
What has been your greatest investment so far? Tesla? Dogecoin? S&P500 index fund in your Roth IRA?
Investing has become synonymous with making money. But really, investing just means devoting ones resources to a particular cause—resources, time, money, energy, and attention.
Money is an incredible resource for freedom and material goods—but as we all know, money ≠ happiness. As Vedic monk Gaur Gopal Das says, "Money has utility value, not happiness value. Don't equate your happiness with something that only has utility value."
What about those other resources? Time, energy, and attention. These are the most valuable commodities to invest.
Invest your time into what fulfills you. For me, it's time with family, eating, writing, and making/drinking hippy dippy coffee. Spending time with my family grants me happiness and pleasure. Eating, especially with loved ones, allows me to share a small experience with them. Writing gives me the freedom to express myself and sort through my crazy mind. Brewing pour over coffee gives me the opportunity to do something creative in the morning and enjoy the results.
Invest your energy into learning. Knowledge and skill sets are the 2 most powerful instruments one can have. For me, it's books, networking, and entrepreneurship/business development. Broadening and applying my knowledge and skillset has allowed me to constantly be an active doer and active learner.
Invest your attention into the goals you want to achieve. Attention is the greatest resource you have. For me, it's helping build businesses, working on my own businesses, and tending to the needs and wants of the people around me. The greatest gift you can give another human being is a good feeling in their heart, and that is what I put my attention to.
Investments shouldn't always come in the form of money. Living is about more than what you do with your money; it's about what you do with your more valuable, less materialistic resources.
